EU legal guarantee notice on Shopify: what Regulation (EU) 2025/1960 requires
Since 27 September 2026, shops that sell goods to consumers in the EU have to remind shoppers of their legal guarantee rights with one fixed design: the EU harmonised notice on the legal guarantee of conformity. This guide explains in plain words what Regulation (EU) 2025/1960 asks for, where the notice should appear, when you also need the GARAN label, and how to set both up on Shopify.
In short
- The harmonised notice is an official image from the European Commission. It reminds shoppers that the legal guarantee of conformity lasts at least two years.
- It has applied since 27 September 2026. The design is set by Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/1960; the duty to use it comes from Directive (EU) 2024/825.
- Online, you must use the colour version and you must not edit it.
- The GARAN label is only for products whose producer gives a free durability guarantee of more than two years. Most shops do not need it.
What the rule requires
The EU Consumer Rights Directive (Directive 2011/83/EU) already asked traders to remind consumers of the legal guarantee of conformity before a sale. Directive (EU) 2024/825 changed that rule. The reminder now has to be given “in a prominent manner, using the harmonised notice”.
Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/1960 of 25 September 2025 fixes what that notice looks like and what it says (Annex I). It also fixes the harmonised label for the commercial guarantee of durability, called the EU GARAN label (Annex II).
The notice reminds shoppers of the main points of the legal guarantee: it lasts at least two years, it can be longer under national law, and the seller must provide remedies when goods are not in conformity. A QR code leads to the Your Europe portal of the EU for more information.
The notice and the GARAN label are two different things
| Harmonised notice | GARAN label | |
|---|---|---|
| Who shows it | Every trader selling goods to consumers | Only for goods with a free producer durability guarantee of more than 2 years |
| Where | At shop level, in a prominent manner | With the particular product, and directly before the order |
| What you may edit | Nothing | Years, brand and model identifier |
| Online format | Colour (RGB) | Colour, may be shown as a small nested label |
Who is affected
The notice concerns every trader that sells goods to consumers in the EU, online and in physical shops. The European Commission’s practical guidelines (April 2026) put it simply: for the notice, there is only a role for the seller, and the seller has to display it in a prominent manner.
The GARAN label works differently. A producer can choose to offer a commercial guarantee of durability at no extra cost, for the entire good and for more than two years. If the producer does this and makes the information available to you, you have to show the label for that product. According to the Commission’s guidelines, sellers do not have to search producer websites for this information.
The rules are consumer law, so they concern sales to consumers. They speak of traders selling to consumers in the EU and do not set a separate rule for sellers based outside the EU. If your business is outside the EU and you sell to EU consumers, ask an adviser how the rules apply to you.

What exactly to show, and where
The harmonised notice
- Use the official file from the European Commission. Online, the notice must be in colour (RGB).
- None of its elements can be edited. Do not change the colours, spacing, fonts or QR code, do not crop or stretch it, and do not add text or icons.
- The Commission’s guidelines add that the notice must be readable at its default display size, and that a clickable link to the same page as the QR code should always be available.
- The official files exist in all 24 official EU languages.
The law says “prominent”, but not exactly where. The Commission gives examples for online shops, which are not a complete list: a short sentence such as “Your legal guarantee rights” on the product catalogue page, in the header of the website or on the check-out page, which opens the notice on the first click or mouse-over. The guidelines also say the notice should be included in the order confirmation email.
The GARAN label
- Use it only when the producer offers a commercial guarantee of durability at no extra cost, covering the entire good, for more than two years. Do not use it for your own shop guarantee or for paid extended warranties.
- Only three fields may be edited: “XX” (the number of years), “Brand/Trademark” (the producer) and “Model identifier”.
- Online, the label is shown in colour. It may be shown as a small “nested” label, but the full label must appear on the first click, mouse-over or tap.
- It must stay with the product it belongs to, for example in the product images or the description. The Directive also asks for this information directly before the shopper places the order, and the guidelines recommend it in the confirmation email too.
How to do it on Shopify
Doing it by hand
You can download the official notice from the European Commission’s website, upload it to Shopify (Content, then Files) and link to it from your header, footer or an announcement bar. You would then repeat this on the cart page and in the “Order confirmation” email template. If you want shoppers to see their own language, you need one file per language and a way to switch between them.
For the GARAN label, you would fill in the years, brand and model in the official file with a graphics program, save one image per product model and add it to each product. When guarantees change, you have to update every image yourself.
With PREPA: EU Guarantee Notice
The app does the same work without theme code:
- It shows the official European Commission artwork in the shopper’s language, in all 24 EU languages.
- By default it adds a “Legal guarantee” link at the bottom of every page. In the theme editor you can show a banner instead, change the link text, or show it only to shoppers in the EU.
- It adds the notice to your cart page, at checkout on Shopify Plus, and gives you a snippet for your order confirmation email.
- It shows the GARAN label next to your product images. Shoppers click or hover to open the full label.
- It assigns guarantee years to many products at once by collection, tag, vendor or product type, or from a CSV file.
- The notice image only loads when a shopper opens it, so your pages stay fast.
Set up the app in 3 steps
Install the app and open it from Apps in your Shopify admin. A guided setup opens.
- Show the legal guarantee notice on your store
Click “Show it on my store”. Your theme editor opens with the “EU Guarantee Notice” app embed already switched on. Click Save at the top right, then come back to the app. A “Legal guarantee” link now appears at the bottom of every page.
- Also show it before checkout
Click “Add it to my cart page”. The theme editor opens with the “EU Guarantee on Cart” block added to your cart page. Click Save and come back. The app checks your live theme again and ticks the step.
- Durability guarantee label (GARAN)
This step is set to “No”, which is right for most shops. If some products have a free producer guarantee of more than 2 years, choose “Yes”, enter your brand name and click “Save”. Click “Choose collections” or “Choose products”, pick the number of years and click “Apply to these products”. Then click “Add the label to my product page” and click Save in the theme editor.
Optional: below the steps, click “Show me how” to add the notice to your order confirmation email. Click “Copy”, then “Open the email editor”, paste the code and click “I have added it to my email”. Every setting is explained on the help page.
Important: This app helps you display the information. You remain responsible for which products are covered and for the accuracy of the information. This is not legal advice.

Is a sentence about the two-year guarantee in my terms and conditions enough?
No. The Directive says the reminder has to be given using the harmonised notice, and Regulation (EU) 2025/1960 says none of its elements can be edited. A text you write yourself does not replace it.
Where on my store should the notice appear?
The law asks for a prominent place but leaves the choice to you. The European Commission’s guidelines give examples such as a link on the product catalogue page, in the header or on the check-out page that opens the notice, and the notice in the order confirmation email.
Do I need the GARAN label?
Only if the producer offers a commercial guarantee of durability at no extra cost, for the entire product, for more than two years, and gives you that information. Your own shop guarantee or a paid extended warranty is not a reason to use the label.
Can I change the colours or translate the notice myself?
No. Online, the notice must be the colour version, and its elements cannot be edited. The European Commission provides it in all 24 official EU languages, so you do not need to translate it.
Does the notice or the label have to appear at checkout?
For the GARAN label, the Directive asks for the information directly before the shopper places the order. The Commission’s guidelines also give the check-out page as one example place for the notice. The app adds both to your cart page on every Shopify plan, and to checkout on Shopify Plus.
My business is outside the EU. Does this apply to me?
The rules speak of traders selling goods to consumers in the EU and do not contain a separate rule for sellers based elsewhere. If you sell to EU consumers from outside the EU, ask an adviser how the rules apply to your business.
What does the app cost?
The Free plan shows the notice on every page in 24 languages and the GARAN label on up to 20 products. The paid plan costs $0.99 per month or $9.99 per year, with a 14‑day free trial, and shows the GARAN label on unlimited products.
